Kali ‘the dark Mother’ is the Hindu goddess who represents destruction. The belt of skulls around her waist symbolised savagery and the cannibalism practised by her cult. Kali is a goddess with a long and complex history in Hinduism. Her earliest history as a creature of indiscriminate violence and wrath still has some influence, while more complex Tantric beliefs sometimes extend her role so far as to be the Ultimate Reality and Source of Being. Finally, the comparatively recent devotional movement largely conceives of Kali as a straightforwardly benevolent mother-goddess. Kali is associated with many devis (goddesses) as well as the deva (god) Shiva.

Kali is generally considered one of the consorts of Shiva. Her name seems to be a female version of the word 'kala' (Sanskrit for 'dark' or 'time'- time in this form being a euphemism for death); it also means Black Female, in contrast to her consort, Shiva, who is white. The goddesses that she is associated or identified with include Durga, Sati, Rudrani, Parvati, Chinnamastika, Chamunda, Kamakshi, Uma, Menakshi, Himavati, Kumari. These names, if repeated, are believed to give special power to the worshipper.

This karthikeya name is common in North India. Because Murukan was brought up by the Krttikā maidens, he is known as Kārttikeya. The Kumāra Tantra depicts Kārttikeya with six faces and six hands. Two hands are in the abhaya and varada poses and in the remaining four hands he bears the weapons of śakti, sword, thunderbolt, and shield. He is said to shine like the morning sun. Tirupati is all set for the grand festival of Tirumala Brahmotsavam, an annual nine-day festival, which begins on Saturday. After conducting the weekly celestial bath called Abhishekam on Friday, the presiding deity was adorned with special diamond studded ornaments by the priests. The entire Tirumala area on the hills have been decorated Tight security arrangements are in place in both the hills and in Tirupathi in the wake of the recent Hyderabad blasts.Armed policemen were posted along the ghat road between Tirupati and Tirumala, while local TTD vigilance and security officials were working in coordination with the Special Protection Group.
TTD sources informed that in Tirupati that the mega festival would commence with the senior purohits hoisting the celestial Garuda flag atop the golden dwajastambham September 16, in accordance with the old practice. Over two lakh devotees from across the country are expected to witness the main event, 'Garuda Sevai' procession on the night of September 20, the sources said.The entire Tirumala and the main roads leading to the Seven Hills have been colourfully ecorated with huge arches, cut outs and illumination. The security has been put on high alert.The daily and weekly Arjitha sevas, including Kalyanotsavam and Sahastrakalashabhishekam, would remain suspended during the festival period, the sources said.APSRTC would operate special buses from neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the sources said.
